Old armoury

The arsenal of arms - History of Saxon armoury

The function of arsenals as a depot for weapons, equipment and trophies is explained.

Pump house

The history of the well and water supply facilities

Movable constructions of the former means of getting water like horse gin, treadmill and steam engine stand in this exhibition.

Water from the well are conveyed by help
of the restored electric motor from 1912:
in the winter holidays: 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
from April to October: 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
on the Advent weekends: 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Garrison church

Documentation of the history

originally Romanic castle chapel;
first garrison church in Saxony (1676);
formally reopened in 2000 following extensive reconstruction work

open from April to October: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
on the day of prayer and repentance and
on the Advent weekends: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
otherwise a view through the door into the church interior is recommended

George's castle

The history of the construction of the building and of the state prison with prison cell

Documentary about the fate of selected inmates of the most feared state prison in Saxony with a cell used during the 18th century.

Have a look into the formerly private rooms of the fortress commandant, as they were furnished around 1900

Commander's horse stable

As it used to look like around 1900 when both the Commandant’s horses and all the draught-horses of the artillery were kept here.

Magdalene’s castle / Barrel cellar

The history of the construction of the building and of the three giant wine barrels

This was built as a Renaissance palace which was used to house the royal family and the provision house. The giant wine cask of August the Strong which held 238,000 litres was kept in the cask cellar from 1725 until 1818.

Artistic installation of glass, steel, light and music shows the gigantic dimensions of the legendary wine cask of Augustus the Strong on a 1:1 scale (238.600 l)

Treasury house

History of the treasury where the Saxon State reserves used to be stored

During uneasy times the building was used as a depot for the state treasures. During the 19th century the state treasures were sometimes also kept here during times of peace (up to 2 million thalers).

Exhibits of Saxon artillery are on display including firearms, uniforms and tin soldiers.

Commander’s garden

Former ornamental garden reserved for the commander’s family.

Household garden at the Treasure house

Used for the subsistence of the soldiers’ families.
