The “Painter’s Route” goes back to the 18th century when more and more travellers ventured from Dresden into the mysterious region up the Elbe river whose majestic table mountains could be seen on a clear day from the Saxon capital. On their return the travellers would tell about the well-wooded, wild romantic gorges, bizarre cliffs and breathtaking views. Little wonder that artists were also attracted to this picturesque world of cliffs and spectacular views. Two such artists, the Swiss Adrian Zingg and Anton Graff, are said to have used the term “Saxon Switzerland” which is still being used today. Many artists of the following generations followed in their footsteps including such famous people as the Romantics Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Ludwig Richter.
The Painter’s Route is the oldest and in its complete course the most attractive of the numerous hiking trails in Saxon Switzerland. It is of a low to medium degree of difficulty for hikers. Some places however do require a secure footing as some of the valleys and gorges can be quite steep.
