Rent a holiday flat 240 m above the Elbe and enjoy the peace and quiet following the closing of the fortress gates. Stroll along the 2.2 km long circular wall and enjoy the unique panorama of Saxon Switzerland. Experience the sunrise and sunset from this unique site. Between the historic buildings and in the fortress forest the 9.5 ha large fortress plateau not only offers numerous sights but also quaint places tucked away which are worth seeing. Königstein is an ideal place to begin a hike through Saxon Switzerland. In the area you will also find many recreational activities such as guided hikes, mountain climbing courses, steamboat trips, and cycle and canoe tours. We also recommend a tour of the castles and palaces featuring the “5 ohnegleichen”. Situated close together yet very distinct, they offer country atmosphere (Rammenau Baroque Palace), a mysterious feeling (Stolpen Castle), a touch of splendour (Großsedlitz Baroque Gardens), a picturesque sight (Weesenstein Palace), and an awe inspiring impression (Königstein Fortress). You can also visit the open-air theatre set among the cliffs of Rathen which is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful natural theatres.

Friedrichsburg: The former pleasure palace at the fortress wall situated 361 metres above sea level provides a unique view of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It was built at the end of the 16th century in the Renaissance style and initially named “Christiansburg” after the Saxon prince elector Christian I. Whilst guns formerly stood on the ground floor, the upper floor was used as a festival hall. In 1728 the Prussian king Frederic William I and his son, the future Frederic II, visited Königstein. To commemorate the meeting of the three Frederics in the Christiansburg, August the Strong renamed the building “Friedrichsburg”. Three years later the prince elector commissioned the reconstruction of the building into a baroque pavilion with a twin flight of outside stairs and a “machine table” which unfortunately was destroyed by lightning in 1744. In the year 2000 a new modern lifting table was built. The table can be set on the ground floor and then conveyed to the upper floor by a lifting mechanism. Today the small festive baroque hall of mirrors has been furnished in the style of the period; it can be booked for special functions. A special attraction is the “magic table” seating 16 people which can be extended to seat 24 people.

In the 17th century a small Renaissance palace was built on the cellars of a medieval brewery house. The building was later named after the spouse of the prince elector John George II of Saxony, Magdalena Sybilla. The Magdalenenburg initially fulfilled two functions. The royal family resided in the two upper storeys and the ground floor and the two cellar storeys were used as a supply depot and a wine cellar where from 1725 to 1818 the giant wine cask of August the Strong containing 238,000 litres once stood. The cask was made following an unproven challenge between the Saxon and the Palatinate prince electors which August the Strong was able to decide in his favour. This wine cask was however already removed in 1818 whilst the famous Heidelberg cask containing 228,000 litres can still be seen today. At the beginning of the 19th century the building was converted into a bomb-proof depot. Nonetheless, the name "Magdalenenburg" was retained to this very day.
