Total length: 115 km
72 km of the Painter’s Route are on the right bank of the Elbe. This is where you will be able to enjoy views of the beautiful sandstone mountains. Here you will hike through narrow valleys and along jagged cliffs, over stairs some of which are steep and narrow and where you will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful lookout points. During your hike you will be able to enjoy the impressive panorama and the fantastic flora and fauna of the National Park.
The left bank of the Elbe with its approx. 43 km of the Painter’s Route is mainly characterised by an open countryside. Here you will be hiking high above the Elbe river towards the town of Pirna. You will enjoy especially beautiful views if you climb on top of the individual sandstone formations such as the Zirkelstein or the Pfaffenstein. A real must is a visit to the majestic Festung Königstein fortress.
