The Old Armoury and the artillery of Königstein Fortress

The exhibition narrates the history of the Old Arsenal and fortress artillery from the late 16th to the early 19th century. It delves into the history and technology of artillery and the principles of close and long-range defense of a mountain fortress.

An interesting military-historical collection is stored here: cannons and mortars, a bomb carriage and pyramids of bombs, guns and accessories.

The building itself is also a subject of the exhibition. The impressive Renaissance structure with rustic portals on the outside and three robust Tuscan columns inside was constructed in 1594 in the course of the expansion of Königstein into a fortress.

Exhibition highlights

Impressive cannons and mortars, most of which once belonged to the armament of Königstein

two 24-pound half kartouwes from 1686 and 1717, each with a barrel length of more than three meters and a range of over a thousand meters,

two 18-pound standing mortars from 1598, presumably commissioned by the first fortress commander,

an accurately recreated bomb carriage for 48-pound mortar shells,

Media stations illustrate historical weapon technology and defense strategies.
