Exhibition in the Old Armoury
The exhibition narrates the history of the Old Arsenal and fortress artillery from the late 16th to the early 19th century. It delves into the history and technology of artillery and the principles of close and long-range defense of a mountain fortress.
An interesting military-historical collection is stored here: cannons and mortars, a bomb carriage and pyramids of bombs, guns and accessories.
The building itself is also a subject of the exhibition. The impressive Renaissance structure with rustic portals on the outside and three robust Tuscan columns inside was constructed in 1594 in the course of the expansion of Königstein into a fortress.
Historically uniformed groups from different federal states and some bordering countries represent the lives of the soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War.
The event remains of the occurrences of the year 1639, when Swedish troops passed the Fortress – coming from Pirna to move into Königstein town. However, a siege and conquest of Königstein Fortress has not taken place in this time and also not later. The fictive conquest, the fighting groups and the military camp give and impression of the military everyday life in the time of the Thirty Years’ War.

Discover more than 200 cannoneers in uniforms and historic personalities at the „Thunder of Cannons above the Elbe Valley“ - 20 exact copies of historic cannon types from the 14th to the 19th century will be fired several times throughout the day. Drummers will provide proper march music, musketeers exercise an shoot at the parade ground.
