Battery Positions 1-8

Batteries are positions of the artillery – a cannon emplacement on a platform that is covered to the front, but open at the back. The fortress had eight battery positions, built in the fortress’ last extension period from 1870 to 1895. The rampart did not offer enough protection any more. Thus, they heaped up earth walls to accommodate the cannons in secure positions. Existing trees remained and new ones were planted to improve the camouflage.
