It was here, that Elector Christian I. (1560-1591) laid the foundation stone of Königstein fortress in 1589. They constructed an octagonal pavilion called “Christian’s Castle”. The upper room served for court festivities. Holding cannons on its ground floor, the pavilion also served as an observation and flanking tower.
On the invitation of Augustus the Strong (1670-1733), the Prussian Soldier King Frederick William I. (1688 - 1740) and Crown Prince Frederick (1712 - 1786) visited Königstein hill in 1728. In memory of the time they had spent here together, Augustus the Strong had the pavilion renamed “Frederick’s Castle”. From 1729 to 1731, they reconstructed it in Baroque style, adding the double-flight perron. Now, a kitchen was on the ground floor, with a hall of mirrors above. A rising table connected both floors.
In 1744, Frederick’s Castle was partly destroyed by lightning and was reconstructed in 1768. The rising table was reconstructed in 1999/2000.
