Lightning Oak Plateau

  • This used to be the location of a 300 year old oak which was often hit by lightning
  • underneath is the “Rose Casemate”: erected in the 18th century and altered into an artillery observation post at the end of the 19th century

Heute

In 1925, three visitors died here when lightning struck into a centuries old oak. 28 others suffered injuries. After a spring storm had broken the treetop in 1956, a whirlwind finally destroyed the oak in 1972. In 1992, a new “Lightning Oak” was planted - with lightning protection.
