George´s bastion

  • built from 1669 to 1679 for the placement of guns which were aimed at the entrance front
  • fitted with five cannons today

On the bastion stood cannons. They could shell the entrance. A copper plate names the builder, John George II. (1613 - 1680) and that it was finished in 1679. Today, George’s Bastion is equipped with five cannons from the 17th and 18th centuries.

A ramp was constructed to transport the cannons. It runs through a gate in George’s Castle to the lower bastion. Since 1760, there have been stairs to the Tenaille. They would have enabled the defenders to surprise attackers invading the fortress.
