Point of descent of French General Henri Giraud

Abstiegsstelle des Generals Henri Giraud

Giraud came to the officers’ camp IV B at Königstein hill in May 1940 as a prisoner of war. From September 1940, he prepared for his escape, got civilian clothes, German money, and a valid train schedule. Together with two confidants, he tied a rope of package cords and strengthened it with telephone lines. Using a code conveyed to his wife by generals who had been released home, the escape was also prepared from France. On 17 April 1942, Henri Giraud was abseiled through an embrasure by two fellow prisoners and then he walked to Bad Schandau. A helper awaited him there with false ID. Giraud went across Germany by train and after six days, he reached neutral Switzerland.
