Old barracks

Alte Kaserne

The probably oldest preserved barracks in Germany was constructed in 1589/90. The 112 meters long building was originally single-floored with 64 vaulted rooms, all of the same size. Each soldier’s family had two of them as a flat. Due to the sloping terrain, only the western part of the building has a cellar. In 1715/16, Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann initiated the addition of a storey to the half side elevation. They created a long attic passage, where musters took place in bad weather.
