The building served as a second barrier to protect the entrance. The German name “Grabenschere” (ditch scissors) relates to its shape like scissors. The mighty gate is impressive. After the Medusa head depicted in the keystone, it is called “Medusa Gate”. Medusa is a dread figure from Greek mythology with snakes in place of hair. She turned everyone who looked at her into stone. Thus, the Medusa at the gate served to deter enemies. An Electoral Saxon, Royal Polish coat of arms crowns the gate. It stems from the period when the Saxon electors were kings of Poland at the same time (1697 – 1706 and 1709 – 1763).
